内容简介:
From the best-selling author of "The Rise of the Creative
Class" comes a brilliant new book on the surprising importance of
place, with advice on how to find the right place for you. It's a
mantra of the age of globalization that where we live doesn't
matter. We can innovate just as easily from a ski chalet in the
Alps or a cottage in Provence as in the office of a Silicon Valley
start-up.According to Richard Florida, this is wrong. Globalization
is not flattening the world; in fact, place is increasingly
relevant to the global economy and our individual lives. Where we
live determines the jobs and careers we have access to, the people
we meet and the 'mating markets' in which we participate. And
everything we think we know about cities and their economic roles
is up for grabs."Who's Your City?" is the first book to report on
the growing body of research on what qualities of cities and towns
actually make people happy in their lives. Choosing a place to live
is as important as choosing a spouse or career, but until now, no
one has rigorously explored this powerful component of subjective
well-being to uncover what people want, need, and get out of the
places they live. London to Paris to Cape Town to Sydney, this book
will be the essential guide to how people choose where to live, and
what those choices mean to their lives and their communities.

From Publishers Weekly
Choosing a spouse and choosing a career are important life
decisions—but perhaps even more predictive of our all-round
personal happiness is our choice of living location, argues Florida
(The Rise of the Creative Class) in this informative if somewhat
dry tome. As globalization makes the world effectively smaller,
economic growth concentrates in certain mega-regions of large
superstar cities, leaving other regions in the proverbial dust. The
areas where we live are also affected by our increasingly mobile
culture, housing priorities that change as we age (from starter
homes to family-friendly suburbs to empty nests and finally
retirement centers) and the global economy. Few of the author's
conclusions are new—people gather where they can make friends with
others like them, personality types tend to cluster—type A to urban
areas, type B to rural—and the book's tone wanders from broad,
Friedmanesque discussion of the world economy to home-buying advice
as well as statistic-and-theory-heavy text as though unsure of its
intended audience. Yet the author opens up a complex, underexamined
subject along the way. (Mar.)

Review
"If you think working remotely means where you live--your
place--doesn't matter anymore, Florida correctly shows us--with his
trademark data and analysis--why you're dead wrong. The book is a
superb treatise on the location paradox: the idea that as the world
becomes more mobile, the more decisive location becomes...We learn
why San Francisco is the best city for young singles; why
Washington D.C. is the best place to raise kids; and why New York
City is one of the top spots for retirees. Something to look
forward to!" -- Michelle Conlin, Business Week
"Planetizen.com," Top 10 Books - 2009
"This book should be read by anyone considering making a move.
More importantly, it should be read by cities to get them thinking
about what it is they do best, what kind of people they're
attracting, and whether they want - or need - to change."
"BusinessWeek,,"."reading "Who's Your City?" feels like a cross
between relationship counseling and a personality exam meant to
determine the best career path: It asks as many questions as it
answers."
"BookPage,,"."Florida's down-to-earth writing and 10-step plan
for choosing the place that fits best will help make deciding where
to settle a most enjoyable endeavor."
"The world is not flat, and Richard Florida is the man to tell
you why where you choose to live is more important than ever.
Passionate and thoughtful, this book is an indispensable guide to
the way our cities really work. The spirit of Jane Jacobs lives
on." -- Tim Harford, Financial Times columnist and author of The

certain cities sing to certain people. If I could talk like Florida
writes, I wouldn't have needed a campaign staff."

"Who's Your City? is another breakthrough idea by urban life
genius Richard Florida. The power of place has everything to do
with our success well beyond our own recognition. If you are
contemplating a move or know someone who is, or are even vaguely
interested in the idea of place as self, this book is a must
read."

书籍介绍
In the age of globalization, some claim that where you live doesnt matter: Alaska, Idaho, and Alabama are interchangeable. The world is, after all, flat. Not so fast. Place, argues the great urbanist Richard Florida, is not only important, its more important than ever. In fact, choosing a place to live is as important to your happiness as choosing a spouse or career. And some regions, recent surveys show, really are happier than others. In Whos Your City, Creative Class guru Richard Florida reports on this growing body of research that tells us what qualities of cities and towns actually make people happyand he explains how to use these ideas to make your own choices. This indispensable guide to how people can choose where to live and what those choices mean to their lives and their communities is essential reading for everyone from urban planners and mayors to recent graduates.
